Minor & Honor Certification

Introduction

With a view to enhance the employability skills and impart deep knowledge in emerging and multidiscipline areas which are usually not being covered in Undergraduate Degree credit framework, Rajarambapu Institute of Technology (RIT) has come up with the scheme of Minor and Honours Degree. The guidelines for this are set inline with the guidelines issued by AICTE. Minor and Honours Degree will carry 18 to 20 credits in addition to the credits essential for obtaining the Under Graduate Degree in Major Discipline (i.e. 160 credits usually). Keeping in mind the global scenario of engineering, students should have specialization in interdisciplinary as well as emerging and advanced subjects which are usually not covered in their major degree disciplines.

Minor Degree: Minor specialization in emerging/ multidisciplinary areas in Under Graduate Degree Courses is allowed where a student of another department can take the minimum additional credits in the range of 18-20 and get a degree with minor from another department. For Example, A Mechanical Engineering student earned extra credits for courses offered by Computer Science and Engineering earns degree as B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering with Minor in Computer Science and Engineering. Credits under the Minor Degree program need to be acquired through blended teaching learning (viz. online/offline theory/practical sessions) process set by the department.

Honours Degree: Under Graduate Degree Courses in emerging / multidisciplinary areas is allowed as specialization from the same department. The minimum additional credits for such courses are in the range of 18-20 and the same is mentioned in the degree, as specialization in that particular area. For example, A Mechanical Engineering student earned extra credits for Robotics offered by Mechanical Engineering earns degree as B.Tech. (Hons.) Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Robotics. Credits under the Honours Degree program need to be acquired through MOOCs.

About Minor Degree at RIT
  • Under this scheme student have to complete extra Seven courses and earn extra 20 credits of a branch other than their native branch.
  • Students have to select a branch for Minor degree. E.g. If Mechanical Engineering student selects Civil Engineering under this scheme, he/she will get Major degree of Mechanical Engineering with Minor degree in Civil Engineering.
  • All the courses is taught by respective department faculty members via online or offline mode.
  • For each course there is extra 3 hrs. scheduled (3 hrs. Theory / 1 hr. Theory + 2 hrs. Practical) per week.
  • Structure of various courses offered by all the departments are attached in the Links section.
  • Evaluation: ISE, UT1, UT2 and ESE is conducted to complete evaluation of minor courses.
  • The year wise schedule of the Minor courses is as follows;
Sr. No. Course Number Year Semester
1 Course I Second Year 3rd Sem.
2 Course II Second Year 4th Sem.
3 Course III Third Year 5th Sem.
4 Course IV Third Year 6th Sem.
5 Course V Third Year 7th Sem.
6 Course VI Final Year 7th Sem.
7 Course VII Final Year 8th Sem.
About Honor Degree at RIT
  • Students from home department are eligible for Honours degree.
  • Under this degree program student have to complete extra six advance MOOC certification courses of their native branch offered by various online platforms and one mini project under the guidance of mentor.
  • E.g. If Mechanical Engineering student selects advanced subjects from same branch under this scheme, he/she will get Major degree along with Honours degree of Mechanical Engineering.
  • All the courses is listed time to time by respective department from online platforms such as NPTEL/ edX/ Coursera/ Udacity/ Purdue Next/ Khan Academy/ QEEE etc.
  • Student can select one/two subject per semester from the list of Honours courses of a branch in which they are pursuing the degree. (see attached structures of respective departments)
  • Mentor is allotted from host departments to guide the students during his/her entire curriculum.
  • Evaluation: Student have to submit certificate of completion of online course. After submission of certificate Viva Oral Exam is conducted to complete evaluation of Honours courses.
  • The year wise schedule of the Honours courses is as follows;
Sr. No. Course Number Year Semester
1 Honours Online Course I Second Year 3rd Sem.
2 Honours Online Course II Second Year 4th Sem.
3 Honours Online Course III Third Year 5th Sem.
4 Honours Online Course IV Third Year 6th Sem.
5 Honours Online Course V Third Year 7th Sem.
6 Honours Mini Project Final Year 7th Sem.
7 Honours Online Course VI Final Year 8th Sem.
Benefits of the Program
  • Interdisciplinary and Advanced Learning: This scheme allow student to learn interdisciplinary and advanced courses.
  • Explore Interdisciplinary Ideas: Students exposure to interdisciplinary courses will help them to explore their ideas in other domains of engineering.
  • Integrated Project Development: Current trends in technology requires extensive knowledge in various engineering disciplines. This scheme help students to display their skills in multiple as well as advanced domains for integrated project.
  • Changing Nature of “Industry Needs”: Current scenario of industry profession is demanding advanced as well as various skill in multiple technologies.
  • Innovation: Knowledge of multiple and recent trends engineering domains helps students to innovate more beyond limits of their own engineering disciplines.
Current Scenario at RIT

RIT started offering courses under Minor and Honours Degree program from AY 2018-19. Earlier institute offered courses under Minor and Honours degree with the credits in the range of 13-15. Later, from AY 2021-22 institute started offering courses with credits in the range of 18-20 as per the revised guidelines of AICTE. Courses have been designed after rigorous brainstorming and considering the inputs from the experts of corresponding domain. The knowledge of these emerging / multidisciplinary areas will help students in capturing the plethora of employment and skill upgradation. Currently each department is offering 7 courses with 20 credits (6 theory/practical courses with 3 credits each and 1 mini project with 2 credits) under Minor Degree program. Under Honours Degree program students need to complete 6 MOOC certification courses (3 credits each) and 1 mini project (2 credits). Each department offers courses under both the degree programs starting from third semester of graduation.

Important Updates

RIT has started implementing NEP-2020 from academic year 2023-24. As per NEP-2020, four verticals are offered as, Multidisciplinary Minor (MDM), Double Minor, Honor and Honor with research etc. Through this NEP guidelines, Minor – Honor certification program now is a part of regular curriculum with compulsory MDM choice and optional Honor choices. Henceforth, w.e.f. AY 2023-24 the Minor-Honor scheme of the institute is terminated.
